One of the most meaningful Smoky Mountain traditions is returning for its eighth year this April. The Mountain Man Memorial March is a series of athletic events that pay tribute to the men and women in our armed services who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country. Background for the Mountain Man Memorial March
The Mountain Man Memorial March in Gatlinburg started in 2008. The march began in honor of Tennessee’s own ROTC Cadet – 1LT Frank B. Walkup IV. This brave man was tragically killed in action while serving in Iraq in 2007. A group of University of Tennessee cadets designed this event to commemorate his service. Since the first march, the event has expanded to become one of the largest of its kind in the United States.
The Mountain Man Memorial March consists of of a variety of runs and marches. The runs are as follows:
- 26.2 mile marathon
- 13.1 mile half marathon
- 20 km run
Competitors in these running events will be categorized by gender and age. The MMMM will also host two marches:
- 26.2 mile march
- 13.1 mile march
Competitors in the marching events can participate as a five person team or as individuals. Participants will be divided into Military and Civilian categories. There will also be Heavy and Light categories that require competitors to wear uniforms and rucksacks with varying weight.

The 2015 Mountain Man Memorial March in Gatlinburg will take place on Saturday, April 11th, 2015. The Opening Ceremony will start at 8:30 a.m. and the race will begin at 9 a.m. Prizes will be awarded at the Closing Ceremony at 7:00 p.m.
The route for the marathon and march starts at the Pi Beta Phi Elementary School, located at 125 Cherokee Orchard Rd, Gatlinburg, TN 37738. Competitors will run or march along Highway 321 and into the Great Smoky Mountains.
Participants can register for the events on Friday, April 10, 2015 by picking up a packet at the Greystone Lodge (559 Parkway, Gatlinburg, TN 37738) or by arriving early to the race between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.
