July is a great time to visit Gatlinburg, as our Smoky Mountain city has several fantastic events taking place throughout the month! Get More on Vacation has put together a list of the top five things to do in Gatlinburg in July:
1. July 4th Parade
Gatlinburg’s 40th annual July 4th Parade begins at the stroke of midnight to mark the official start of Independence Day. This beloved Smoky Mountain event, which is the first Independence Day parade in the nation, honors veterans and other U.S. military heroes as nearly 100,000 spectators line the streets of downtown Gatlinburg.
2. River Raft Regatta
The River Raft Regatta is another popular event taking place on July 4th, kicking off at 10 a.m. at the Christ in the Smokies bridge on River Road in downtown Gatlinburg. Contestants can enter anything that floats into the race in the categories of Treasure and Trash, which are handmade and non-handmade rafts, respectively. Awards are given to the top three rafts in each category, as well as to the most creative raft.
Gatlinburg’s magnificent July 4th fireworks display commemorates Independence Day with a bang and can be seen from anywhere in the downtown area. Since this event has been designated a top 20 event by the Southeast Tourism Society, it is definitely one of the top things to do in Gatlinburg in July! The fireworks begin at 10 p.m. on July 4th, 22 hours after the midnight parade.
4. Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair
The Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair is a huge showcase of over 150 booths where the area’s best artisans and craftspeople feature their work. In addition, there is great country and bluegrass entertainment to enjoy. The event takes place at the Gatlinburg Convention Center from July 17- 26, 2015, and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., except for Sundays when it is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Musicians, artisans, costumed storytellers, and other performers share their talents with visitors to downtown Gatlinburg as part of this free event. Smoky Mountain Tunes and Tales runs throughout the summer, including the entire month of July, and begins each evening at 6 p.m.
